While he was originally given a poor prognosis, he survived and used his story to help inspire millions through LiveStrong.org.

Lance Armstrong Facts #6: Livestrong.org is well known for selling the yellow silicone Live Strong wristband. Originally launched in May 2004, the wristband was designed by Nike and intended to be a fund-raising item for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The foundation has sold 70 million bands to date, and their success has inspired other charities to sell their own silicone wristbands to promote their messages.

Lance Armstrong Facts #7: Lance founded the Lance Armstrong foundation in 1997 after his experience surviving cancer. The foundation exists to “inspire and empower” cancer sufferers and their families under the motto “unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything.” In addition to raising awareness, the foundation works to provide practical information and tools for cancer sufferers.

Lance Armstrong Facts #8: Lance has been married once, engaged once more, and has had a number of other high-profile romances that ended suddenly. After a short courtship, Armstrong married his girlfriend Kristin Richard in May of 1998. They had three children together, but filed for divorce in late 2003. The divorce came about suddenly and was a surprise for many of the couple’s friends and family members. While no official reason was given, Kristin Richards did state that she felt certain aspects of Armstrong’s celebrity and cancer comeback straining their marriage.

Lance began dating singer Sheryl Crow soon after his divorce and the two became engaged in late 2005, but split in early 2006. The two split due to the fact that Crow wanted to get married and have kids immediately, and Lance did not want to jump into that commitment so quickly due to the young age of his current children and the recentness of his divorce.

In addition, there has been speculation that both his marriage and his other relationships ended due to personality problems. Lance Armstrong is known for making decisions and life changes very suddenly; especially with his personal relationships. In addition, bike racers (and Armstrong specifically) are not particularly well known for their ability to maintain monogamy.
